Who are italk Broadband?

Not the best known provider around, you’d be forgiven for thinking that italk must be new to the market. However, they have actually been around since 2007 with a focus on simple, fast broadband with UK based customer support.

Let's take a look in more detail at what italk Broadband has to offer.

What packages do italk Broadband offer?

italk offer a good choice of packages for those in both fibre and full fibre areas, all on a 24 month fixed price contract.

  • Simply Broadband - ADSL connection with average speeds of 10Mb
  • Fast Fibre - FTTC connection with average speeds of 35Mb
  • Superfast Fibre - FTTC connection with average speeds of 63Mb
  • Full Fibre 50 - Full Fibre FTTP connection with average speeds of 40Mb
  • Full Fibre 100 - Full Fibre FTTP connection with average speeds of 80Mb
  • Full Fibre 250 - Full Fibre FTTP connection with average speeds of 220Mb

italk home phone

Line rental is included with pay as you go calls. You can add a more inclusive call package to your broadband deal if you need one. Your options are:

  • Evening & Weekend - Free calls to UK landline numbers at evenings and weekends
  • International - Calls to 21 designated countries charged at 3p per minute. A connection fee of 15.9p applies to all chargeable calls
  • Anytime - Free calls to UK landline numbers at all times

It's worth noting that these will only cover you for 60-minute calls. This means that after the initial hour has passed, you will be charged the standard rate for every minute thereafter. If you need longer, don’t worry - you can hang up and redial before the end of the 60 minute duration.

Why choose italk Broadband?

Truly unlimited broadband

100% unlimited downloads are standard with italk and you won't be artificially slowed down during peak hours.

Fixed price guarantee

italk broadband packages all come with a fixed price guarantee for the full 24 month contract. This means no mid contract price rises, giving you complete peace of mind for the full length of the contract.

No setup fees or hidden costs

There are no setup costs, activation charges or hidden fees with italk. The only cost is to cover the postage of your router.

UK customer service

italk’s customers care is UK based and available via phone or email during office hours Monday - Friday. You can even request a callback via the website.

Because they are relatively small compared to the likes of Sky and BT, they aren’t included in the quarterly figures given by Ofcom. We can however look at their Trustpilot rating. They are rated as ‘excellent’ with a score of 4.7 out of 5, with over 10,000 reviews. 81% of their customers rate them as Excellent and 10% as great.

What's bad about italk Broadband?

Few extras

Italk's simple approach means it comes with little in the way of extras. There is no TV option, no WiFi hotspots or any of the features you would expect from the more premium providers.

Long contracts

Italk don’t offer any short term contracts, instead all contracts are 24 months.

No speed guarantees

Speed guarantees are pretty common now with most providers offering some sort of guaranteed minimum speed before joining. However, italk don’t offer this guarantee and customers must accept that their connection isn’t guaranteed to reach any specific speeds.

Not the cheapest

Italk are not the cheapest on the market, despite their simple, no fuss, limited extras approach.

Basic router

Italk don’t publish much information about their router. Their website simply says that’s it’s free - not really a selling point given that free routers are pretty much standard with most providers.

Based on the information we are able to track down it appears to be an older 802.11n model. You may find that your internet speeds slow down if you move away from where the router is positioned. Other than that its a pretty basic router but should do the job.

If your current provider is Virgin Media then you will need to let them know that you're leaving and it's up to you to coordinate the end of one contract and the start of another.

If you're choosing a broadband package and are currently with another provider that uses the Openreach network, then they will do the contacting on your behalf.
