All you need to know about Sky Cinema
Since its launch in 1990, Sky Cinema (formerly Sky Movies) has gone on to be the top place to get the latest films straight from the cinema.
Let’s take a look in more detail at what Sky Cinema has to offer.
What is Sky Cinema?
Sky Cinema, previously known as Sky movies, is a subscription bolt-on for your TV package, giving you access to thousands of movies on demand, 11 live channels and now the Paramount Plus app (if you watch directly with Sky).
Stuffed full of Hollywood blockbusters, award-winning classics and even some Sky Originals, Sky Cinema really is the home of movies.
Sky Cinema can be easily added to your Sky TV package and is also available to customers with Virgin Media TV, BT TV and NOW TV.
What can I watch on Sky Cinema?
Sky Cinema comes with a few different features to keep even the biggest film buffs happy.
11 channels - Each Sky Cinema channel is centred around a different genre so you can easily find something to watch. The current list of Sky Cinema channels is:
- Sky Premier
- Sky Action
- Sky Comedy
- Sky Family
- Sky Disney
- Sky Drama
- Sky Greats
- Sky Hits
- Sky Sci-Fi
- Sky Select
- Sky Thriller
Movies on demand - Sky Cinema customers are given access to over 1000 movies on demand.
Temporary channels - There is also the occasional temporary channel to mark certain events such as Sky Christmas at, well Christmas of course, or even a Harry Potter channel (muggles allowed).
Paramount+ - Paramount+ is available to Sky TV customers with Sky Cinema at no extra cost. Paramount+ is a brand-new streaming service from Paramount, showcasing everything from blockbuster movies to new originals and iconic shows.
- Some of the biggest movie franchises and award-winning classics, from Mission Impossible to Transformers, with more Hollywood blockbusters throughout the rest of 2022
- New originals and exclusive series such as Halo, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and The First Lady
- And a huge variety of iconic shows like South Park and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
Paramount+ is only available to Sky TV customers. It isn't available in the Sky Cinema packages offered by Virgin Media, NOW or BT.
How do I watch Sky Cinema?
The easiest way to watch Sky Cinema is with a Sky TV subscription. But don't worry if you're not a Sky TV customer, there are still plenty of other ways you can watch.
Watch on Sky TV
The simplest way to get Sky Cinema is as a Sky TV customer. You can add it to your subscription when you sign up, or upgrade an existing subscription at any time. Sky Cinema does come with an 18 month subscription, and if you're an existing customer this will mean starting a new 18 month contract.
Sky TV customers also get access to the Sky Go app, so you can watch from your laptop, phone, or tablet.

Watch on Virgin Media
Virgin Media customers can easily add all 11 Sky Cinema channels to their TV bundle. Alternatively, Sky Cinema is included as standard with three of Virgin's TV bundles: the Bigger bundle + Movies package, the Bigger bundle + Sports & Movies package and the Ultimate Volt bundle.
You can also download the Virgin TV Go app and watch hundreds of Sky Cinema titles on up to five devices.

Watch on NOW TV
Watch without the 18 month contract with NOW TV's Sky Cinema Monthly Pass. You get full access to the 11 Sky Cinema channels plus movies on demand on a rolling monthly basis. You may even be able to take advantage of a free 7 day trial (just make sure you cancel if you don't wish to continue, otherwise it will auto renew).
Watch either via the NOW TV box if you have one, or via the NOW TV app. There is no Sky Cinema App included with the NOW TV Sky Cinema Pass, but this shouldn't be a problem as you can still watch on any device that supports the NOW TV app.
Add Sky Cinema to your NOW TV subscription
Watch on BT TV
In February 2020 BT introduced flexible BT TV packages where you can upgrade, downgrade and add bolt-ons via NOW TV.
BT customers can add a NOW TV Sky Cinema Monthly Pass to their BT TV package. It is already included with the VIP and Big Entertainment BT TV Packages.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between Sky Cinema and Sky Movies?
Sky Cinema is the new and improved Sky Movies. The name was changed to Sky Cinema in July 2016 along with upgrades to the service offering. Daily new premier films were added, along with movies on demand and HD as standard for Sky TV customers.
Can I get Sky Cinema without a contract?
The best way to get Sky Cinema without a contract is via NOW TV. Their Sky Cinema pass is on a rolling 30 day contract so you can easily cancel.
If you take Sky Cinema as part of your Sky TV or Virgin Media package then you will be subject to their minimum contract, which is usually 18 months.
Can I watch Sky Cinema in HD?
Sky Cinema has HD as standard for Sky TV and Virgin Media customers, plus you have the option to upgrade to Ultra HD.
Those taking Sky Cinema from NOW TV will have to take their Boost add on for an additional cost. With the Boost add on you can stream in full HD and on 3 devices at once.
Do you need broadband for Sky Cinema?
Yes, you will need a broadband connection to watch Sky Cinema regardless of whether you watch directly with Sky or via other providers such as Virgin Media, NOW TV or BT.
Can I watch Sky Cinema on the move?
You can access Sky Cinema though Sky Go if you are a Sky TV customer, or Virgin TV Go if you are a Virgin Media Customer.
How to switch
Once you have found the deal you want, simply click the ‘View Deal’ button. This will take you to the providers website, who will guide you through the rest of the process.
If your current provider is Virgin Media then you will need to let them know that you're leaving and it's up to you to coordinate the end of one contract and the start of another.
Some broadband providers may increase monthly prices in line with the retail or consumer price index each year during the length of your contract. Please refer to individual broadband provider's terms and conditions before signing up.
