All you need to know about Sky Sports

Since the launch of Sky Sports in 1991, Sky has made sports TV what it is today and is no doubt the undisputed heavyweight champion of televised sports.

What is Sky Sports?

Starting life as a single channel, Sky Sports has gone on to claim its well deserved place as top of the leaderboard when it comes to televised sports. It's now an 11 channel collection showing the biggest events across a huge range of sports including pay per view events.

What can I watch on Sky Sports?

Sky Sports has 11 dedicated sports channels. The available channels are:

Sky Sports Main Event - Highlights the biggest sporting events each week from across the other Sky Sports channels, including high profile Premier League matches.

Sky Sports Premier League - Coverage of the English Premier League.

Sky Sports Football - Covers football that isn't in the Premier League, such as EFL, Scottish football, Carabao Cup and the home nations in Euro 2020 Qualifiers.

Sky Sports Cricket - Dedicated cricket channel showing England home Test, ODI & T20 and all ICC competitions.

Sky Sports F1 - Full coverage of every practice, race and qualifying session of the F1 season.

Sky Sports Action & Sky Sports Arena - Two channels but only available together, covers a host of major sports and events, including NBA, rugby league, tennis and darts.

Sky Sports Golf - Live coverage of all 4 majors, including the US Open and Open Championship. Plus, live events from the PGA, European and LPGA Tours.

There are also a few free channels that are available to all Sky TV customers without a separate subscription. These are:

Sky Sports Mix - A sample of live sport including football, golf from Europe and the US, international cricket plus documentaries and interviews.

Sky Sports News - 24 hour news coverage plus highlights from the sporting world.

Sky Sports Racing - Launched in 2019, this channel brings you coverage of domestic, European and international horse racing events including Ascot.

How do I watch Sky Sports?

The easiest way to watch Sky Sports is with a Sky TV subscription. But don't worry if you're not a Sky TV customer, there are still plenty of other ways you can watch.

Watch on Sky TV

Sky TV customers can choose to add just one sports channel, or all of them. Ideal if you are only interested in certain sports.

It's worth noting that if you sign up to have the full complete set of Sky Sports channels then this comes with an 18 month contract. Opt for single channels only and these are available on a rolling monthly basis.

Add Sky Sports to your Sky TV subscription

Watch on Virgin Media

Virgin Media TV customers can subscribe to all Sky Sports channels with the Sky Sports Collection premium pick add on. Customers with the Virgin TV Bigger bundle receive Sky Sports News, Mix and Racing already as part of the package.

Watch on NOW TV

NOW TV offers customers Sky Sports Passes which give you all the Sky Sports channels without the long contract. The passes are:

  • Sky Sports Day Pass - Full Sky Sports suite for 24 hours
  • Sky Sports Week Pass - Full Sky Sports Suite for 7 Days
  • Sky Sports Monthly Pass - Full Sky Sports suite for 1 month

You can also buy a Sky Sports Mobile Monthly Pass which gives 5 Sky Sports channels - Premier League, Action, Arena, Racing and Sky Sports News - for smartphones only.

The monthly passes do auto renew so you will need to cancel these if you don't wish to continue.

All the Sky Sports passes can be bought either as standalone passes, or with other NOW TV passes like the Entertainment pass.

Watch on BT TV

In February 2020 BT introduced flexible BT TV packages where you can upgrade, downgrade and add bolt-ons.

BT Fibre broadband customers can add a NOW TV Sky Sports Monthly Pass to their BT TV package. It is already included with the VIP and Big Sport BT TV Packages.

If you are a standard broadband customer then you can still add the NOW TV Sky Sports pass, but you will have to watch via the NOW TV app. You won’t be able to watch via the TV Guide on your BT TV box and can’t record shows.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sky Sports in HD as standard?

Yes, Sky Sports comes in HD as standard for Sky TV customers. You then have the option to upgrade to Ultra HD for an additional monthly cost, though only selected events will be shown in Ultra HD. If you are a NOW TV or BT TV customer then the standard is 720p. You can upgrade to their Boost pack and watch in 1080p.

Can I get Sky Sports without a contract?

NOW TV allows you to watch Sky Sports on a rolling monthly contract. If you sign up to Sky Sports with either Sky or Virgin Media then you will be subject to their minimum contract, usually 18 months.

How to switch

Once you have found the deal you want, simply click the ‘View Deal’ button. This will take you to the providers website, who will guide you through the rest of the process.

If your current provider is Virgin Media then you will need to let them know that you're leaving and it's up to you to coordinate the end of one contract and the start of another.
