Should I pay for a TV subscription?
When comparing TV packages you should think about how you watch TV and the content you enjoy. Pay TV packages offer extra channels depending on which package you go for, as well as premium channels like Sky Sports and Sky Cinema.
Which providers offer pay TV subscription?
Whilst most of the main broadband providers in the UK offer TV packages, there are only a few who offer it as a standalone product.
Sky TV is delivered to you via a satellite dish, meaning you can get it pretty much anywhere. You don't need to be a Sky broadband customer to to take a TV package with them.
Virgin Media TV has a good range of TV bundles to choose from, although it must be taken alongside Virgin Media broadband.
NOW TV is a streaming service, so whilst you do need broadband to watch, it doesn't have to be with them. NOW TV comes in the form of flexible monthly TV passes so are a great option if you only need some channels for short times, such as Cinema or Kids channels.
BT TV must be taken alongside BT broadband and offers packages based around BT Sport and Now memberships (more on these below).
Freeview
A lot of households may decide not to take out an expensive pay TV subscription, and instead opt for Freeview. With Freeview you get all the usual channels like BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, as well as other popular favourites like Film4, Dave and E4.
New TV’s should have Freeview built into them, you just need to connect an aerial and you’re good to go. Depending on your TV, you might have to connect a set top box if you wish to record shows, or watch in HD.
Streaming Apps
There are also a lot of different streaming apps all offering great content, like Netflix, Amazon or Apple TV+.
These each come with their own subscription costs which, if you are also signing up to a pay TV service like Sky, can really add up.
Can I get TV without broadband?
Yes, you can, but your choices are limited. Sky TV is delivered over satellite so you do not need to take broadband to get Sky TV. Although you will loose access to a lot of functionality if you don’t have a broadband connection. For example, you will need a broadband connection in order to watch catch-up, box sets and other on-demand content.
How to switch
Once you have found the deal you want, simply click the ‘View Deal’ button. This will take you to the providers website, who will guide you through the rest of the process.
If your current provider is Virgin Media then you will need to let them know that you're leaving and it's up to you to coordinate the end of one contract and the start of another.
