Broadband in Hull works a little differently. You won't find broadband packages from any provider that runs on the Openreach network, such as BT or Sky, or even the likes of Virgin Media. The majority of the broadband and phone services in the Hull area are provided by a single company, KCOM.
Why is broadband in Hull different?
UK phone companies were originally much smaller and more scattered around the country. Over time, most of them were absorbed into the Post Office Telephone Group - which later became BT. The network in Hull and its surrounding area, however, pushed back from being absorbed and remained independent, which is still the case today.
KCOM, also known as KC or Kingston Communications or Karoo, is the only fixed line network that covers most of the HU postcode, there is no Openreach or Virgin Media network there.
KCOM
KCOM covers the majority of the HU postcode, that’s around 200,000 homes and businesses. At the end of 2017, KCOM controlled 75% of the broadband services in the Hull area. They started life in the early 20th century as the Hull Corporation later becoming the Hull City Council. They have since been known by a few different names including Kingston Communications, KC and Karoo.
KCOM runs its own network, so whilst the majority of providers in the UK are offering FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) packages, KCOM is able to offer full FTTH (fibre to the home) with some of the fastest broadband speeds in the UK. The higher speeds in the range are sold under its 'Lightstream' packages. So whilst choice of provider may be limited in Hull, the speed that KCOM offers should keep most customers happy.
All of KCOM’s broadband packages also include PAYG calls, meaning you won’t have to get home phone services separately. This can be upgraded to a call package if you choose.
What are the alternatives to KCOM
While Openreach providers and Virgin Media are a no go for Hull, that doesn't mean you're completely without choice if you live there.
4G/5G home broadband - 4G/5G home broadband is internet that travels through the airwaves, just like the internet your mobile phone uses. Instead of connecting to a fixed line, the router in your home connects to the airwaves.
Mobile broadband - Mobile broadband uses a data SIM, similar to those used in mobile phones. You can use a dongle to create a portable hotspot and connect multiple devices. Though unless you’re on an unlimited data contract this will not be a permanent solution for the majority of people.
Satellite broadband - Satellite broadband is available anywhere in the UK from a number of different providers. However it is quite slow and very expensive to install. This option is usually a last resort for customers.
Smaller ISPS - A few smaller ISPs have appeared in recent years.
- Pure Broadband offers FTTH broadband with speeds of up to 900Mb
- Giganet offers residents up to 1000Mb (1Gb) broadband along with unlimited data and a guarantee of no price rises for life
- Wisper Broadband has wireless transmitters set up around Hull which transmit broadband to a special 'dish' on your home
